DISABILITY INSURANCE
YOUR INCOME IS YOUR MOST VALUABLE ASSET
Shield your family from unforeseen health setbacks with a tailored monthly tax-free benefit
What would happen to your financial stability if an accident or illness prevented you from working tomorrow? Most Canadians insure their cars and homes, yet forget to insure the very income that pays for them. Disability insurance is designed to shield your family from unforeseen health setbacks by providing a monthly tax-free benefit to cover your mortgage, bills, and lifestyle.
Tailored Solutions for Every Budget and Need
The most important part of my role as a broker since 2020 is ensuring you are in a “vehicle” that you can actually afford and that meets your specific objectives. We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. We can customize your coverage based on:
Monthly Benefit Amount
Typically replacing 60-85% of your pre-tax earnings to maintain your standard of living.
Elimination Period
(Waiting Period)
You can choose how long you are willing to wait before benefits kick in (e.g., 0, 30, or 112 days), which directly impacts your premium cost.
Benefit Duration
Whether you need protection for 2 years, 5 years, or until age 70, we tailor the timeframe to your long-term goals.
Definition of Disability
We offer specialized “Own Occupation” or “Regular Occupation” definitions to ensure you are covered if you cannot perform your specific professional duties.
Why The Knowledge Gap Matters
Many people rely solely on their employer’s group plan without realizing the limitations. As your broker, I help you understand the “Why” behind your policy:
Portability
Unlike group benefits, a personal policy follows you even if you change jobs or start your own business.
Tax-Free Benefits
When you pay your own premiums, the benefits you receive are generally tax-free, whereas group plan benefits may be taxable.
Contractual Guarantee
Your personal policy is a legal contract that the insurance company cannot cancel as long as you pay your premiums.
Specialized Support for Diverse Professionals
Whether you are a self-employed contractor in Calgary, a tech professional in Toronto, or a business owner in Vancouver.
Bilingual Support (EN/ES)
I provide the bilingual expert guidance needed to navigate these options.
For Business Owners
We can structure benefits to cover your fixed business overhead expenses (rent, utilities, salaries) while you are unable to work.
For Individuals
We ensure your "Income Protection" pillar is solid, allowing you to focus on recovery rather than financial frustration.
Protect Your Future Earnings Today
Don’t wait for an accident to happen before realizing your income isn’t protected. Let’s build a tailored disability strategy that fits your budget.
Frequently asked questions disability insurance
Is my employer’s group plan enough to protect me?
What qualifies as a "Disability" under these policies?
Whether an accident occurs during work hours, while on vacation with your family, or on a simple day off, your policy can provide 24-hour coverage depending on how we set up your plan. A “disability” is defined by your inability to work due to a physical injury or a health condition, and we prioritize an “Own Occupation” definition; this ensures you are considered disabled if you cannot perform the specific duties of your profession, even if you could technically work in a different field.
Can I afford this as a self-employed professional or contractor?
Absolutely. One of the biggest advantages of working with a broker is that we can adjust the Elimination Period (waiting period) to fit your cash flow. If you have an emergency fund for 90 days, we can set your policy to kick in after that, which significantly lowers your monthly premium. We build a strategy that protects your future without straining your present.
How long will I receive benefits if I can't work?
This is known as the Benefit Duration. Depending on your goals and budget, we can tailor the coverage to last for 2 years, 5 years, or all the way until age 70. My role is to ensure that your “Income Protection” pillar aligns with your long-term financial plan and retirement goals.
Are the disability benefits taxable in Canada?
This is a crucial distinction. If you pay your own premiums with after-tax dollars (a personal policy), the monthly benefits you receive are generally 100% tax-free. Many group plans, where the employer pays part of the premium, result in taxable benefits, meaning you receive much less than you expected when you need it most.
